Jesus in his Gospels places no small value in the power of belief.
Belief itself leads to the experience of the power of God’s Love. From
belief, which includes faith and trust, come miracles themselves. “If
ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will,
and it shall be done unto you.”
Every Christian would agree that this is what Jesus teaches. Yet few
indeed are those Christians who practice healing through the Holy
Spirit. Miracles remain a mysterious and distant possibility. Why is
that? Jesus uses the parable of the Prodigal Son to elucidate this. We
as human beings think we have squandered our spiritual inheritance or
power. We no longer think of ourselves as children of a perfect
Creator. This squandering has led to fear of retribution, in other
words fear of God.
We
are now in the amazing position as human beings of being indecisive
when our brother needs healing. Should we use the unfailing power of
the Holy Spirit or modern medicine which has statistical failure built
in? We almost always use medical science as our trusted first resort.
Yet sooner or later we have a problem for which medicine has no
answer. Only then, it seems, do we resort to prayer.
At
that point we run into another difficulty. We have all, at one time or
another experienced what seems to be failure in our prayer requests.
Doesn’t Jesus promise, “all prayers are answered?” If the Holy Spirit
has no limit on His power to heal, from whom does failure come? As all
powerful as the Holy Spirit is, He can not oppose the will of one of
God’s creations; you. If you are determined that God is fearful, as
the story of the Prodigal Son suggests, love or the answer to prayer
cannot circumvent your chosen belief. And the answer to our prayer for
God’s love remains mysteriously unanswered.
So
how do we overcome this situation where our prayers are only
haphazardly answered? Jesus lovingly points out in Matthew 18:19: That
if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they
shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father, which is in Heaven.
In other words, by joining with a brother in prayer you experience the
love that overcomes the fear that separates you from God. The second
part of this instruction lies in the idea of “agree.” To agree is to
communicate or join minds. Communication must involve truth. You
cannot communicate a lie, for that is to communicate nothing. Sickness
is a lie. It does not exist in heaven- in other words, in reality.
Healing is a reflection of the condition of Heaven. It is a truth that
two can “agree” upon. So through the medium of truth, miracles “shall
be done for them of my Father which is in Heaven.” Is this not the
time when we can make our first resort prayer that calls on the
unfailing power of the Holy Spirit? As Jesus points out in Matthew 10,
The kingdom of Heaven is at hand.
