Gospel of John
Chapter VI

King James Bible Text

Study Notes Commentary

1 After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias.

Verse 1 Jesus continues his travels, teaching the love of God! It’s a whole new message of "Love one another!"

2 And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased.

Verse 2 Jesus has quite a gathering now, and still He is doing what God asks of Him! Your job is to forgive your "enemies!"

3 And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.

Verse 3 Can you "picture" this scene? Remember that this is all a picture!

4 And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh.

Verse 4 Nigh means near. A celebration for the Jewish people is coming up!

5 When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?

Verse 5 Jesus, ever practical, is asking the disciple, Philip, how they are going to feed the people!

6 And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.

Verse 6 Jesus is testing Philip’s faith! He already knows what He is to do! Could it be a miracle? Remember that Jesus is a miracle worker and knows miracles to be real and natural! Do you? Are you trusting in miracles?

7 Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.

Verse 7 Philip tells Jesus that it will take a lot more bread than two hundred pennyworth (meaning as much as can be bought for a penny) to feed the crowd – even if each only takes a little!

8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him, Verse 8 Now it’s Andrew’s time for a good idea!

9 There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?

Verse 9 "That boy over there has some bread and a couple of fishes!" Firstly, you have to start trusting in miracles – let go and let God!
10 And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.

Verse 10 Let’s see! Five barley loaves, two small fishes, five thousand mouths to feed – you do the math! This will take a miracle!

11 And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.

Verse 11 The disciples wait while Jesus blesses the food, and then they give it out! Bless the food and dig in – imagine that! There is still plenty to eat! Nothing like a full belly to make you happy!

12 When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.

Verse 12 Here’s the surprise of all surprises! Gather up the leftovers! And there are leftovers! Jesus is the Man!!

13 Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.

Verse 13 In fact, there are twelve baskets of leftovers! How did that happen? Go on – explain that to a nonbeliever – I dare you! Somewhere you just have to BELIEVE IN MIRACLES!

14 Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world. Verse 14 Okay… So now they believe! "Yep, Jesus is the prophet that Moses spoke about in the Old Testament!"

15 When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.

Verse 15 The crowd tries to make a king (or idol) out of Jesus! Here’s where Jesus leaves the crowd and takes time to talk to His heavenly Father! Do you take the time? Go on – ask God for help!

16 And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,

Verse 16 The story continues! It’s night time and they’re fishing. Jesus’ ministry lasted only 3 years on earth - how amazing!

17 And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.

Verse 17 Back in the boat, going to Capernaum! Jesus is nowhere in sight! (Where the heck is He?)

18 And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.

Verse 18 Oops, a storm is brewing! Is there a "storm" brewing in you? Is that why you are reading this?

19 So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid. Verse 19 The disciples can’t believe their eyes! Here’s Jesus coming towards them and walking on the water! Holy mackerel! Even His disciples have never ever seen anything like this before!
20 But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid. Verse 20 All Jesus says is "Don’t be afraid, it’s only Me!" (No fuss about it at all!)
21 Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went. Verse 21 Sort of "time travel," eh? Have a guess how that happened! Can you see that miracles cannot be explained? Just expect them all the time!
22 The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone; Verse 22 Now the crowd really is amazed! "What happened? How did Jesus do that?" Don’t you sometimes ask yourself, "What happened? How did I get here?" To find an answer for yourself, you have to ask the question yourself! One like, "What’s going on in me?" Then ask God to show you!

23 (Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks:)

Verse 23 Howbeit means although. Give thanks for all the miracles that are happening to you! You’re reading this, aren’t you? That is a miracle!

24 When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus. Verse 24 Now "the chase is on!" Whether you know it or not – you are always looking for The Christ! Where is He? In you! Can you feel the pressure? God is that pressure!

25 And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?

Verse 25 Hither means here; to this place. Do you think the crowd is really interested in when He arrived? Or are they just looking for another good show?
26 Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. Verse 26 Jesus says, "You missed it! I showed you the miracle of God’s limitless giving, and all you saw was that your bellies were filled!"

27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. Verse 27 Don’t look for worldly goods that won’t last! Look for heavenly goods, which last forever, and which are given you from God through Jesus! Remember that worldly goods go rotten and die, but heavenly goods last forever!

28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?

Verse 28 The people ask Jesus, "How do we do God’s works?" Now is the moment for you to ask the very same question of God! "How may I serve You, Father?"

29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

Verse 29 "Believe in God by believing in Me," says Jesus! Nowhere in the world will you hear this heavenly message!

30 They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?

Verse 30 Oh my goodness, now they’re saying, "Give us a sign so that we may believe!"

31 Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat. Verse 31 They remember the Old Testament stories of miraculous food from heaven!

32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.

Verse 32 "Moses did not give the forefathers bread from heaven – God did!" Clear and simple – God gives the TRUE bread forever – the bread of Life Everlasting!

33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. Verse 33 Jesus says, "I am the bread of Life! I am the bringer of the good news of God – believe Me or believe what I say!"

34 Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.

Verse 34 Yes! The people finally get what Jesus is trying to tell them! Have you "got" it?

35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

Verse 35 Here’s what Jesus really says:
"I am the bread of life!"
"I am the light of the world!"
"I am the gate for the sheep!"
"I am the good shepherd!"
"I am the One I claim to be!"
"I am the resurrection and the life!"
"Before Abraham was, I am!"

36 But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.

Verse 36 This New Testament book of John is for you! Don’t trouble yourself with anyone else’s disbelief! Remember, you are the one!

37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

Verse 37 In no wise means in no way. Everyone is called to God! No one is rejected! It’s up to you to accept God’s call! Will you?

38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

Verse 38 Jesus says six times, "I have come down from heaven!" Can you find out where He says it? (Verses 33,38,41,50,51&58)

39 And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. Verse 39 The good shepherd doesn’t lose his sheep, but brings them safely home! Relax! God’s got you – this is your last day! Now you are born again!

40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day. Verse 40 Now is the only time there is! Your life in Christ is eternal – right now! Just let Jesus do His job – you have nothing to do with that!

41 The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.

Verse 41 As soon as Jesus declares Who He is, the Jews are out to "get" Him! Are you going to kill the Christ in your heart? That is what you have done in the past! But – the past is gone! Right now, you are brand new!

42 And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?

Verse 42 Again the Jews say, "We know his father and mother, and he says he came down from heaven? Who does he think he is? We know he’s only a carpenter’s son!" Blah, blah, blah, blah!
43 Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.

Verse 43 Jesus’ answer to the Jews is, "Stop your talking among yourselves – you’re not going anywhere with that!"

44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Verse 44 God calls you! You only come to Jesus when finally you hear God’s call! God, through Jesus, has chosen you, and, in fact, you had nothing to do with the choosing! God is in charge of your life!

45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

Verse 45 Even the Old Testament prophets said that everyone will learn about God! Now you are learning of the Father! That’s all you need to know!

46 Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.

Verse 46 Jesus is saying He has seen God and that no man ever has! He knows He is God’s Son and is no longer a human!

47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

Verse 47 This is the promise Jesus makes to you! "Believe in Me and have everlasting life!"

48 I am that bread of life.

Verse 48 This is one of Jesus’ "I am" statements! He cannot be kept out of your life! Don’t even try – it’s too late!

49 Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.

Verse 49 Yes, your forefathers received miraculous food in the desert, but where did it get them? They didn’t learn the lesson that God is the source of all good!

50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.

Verse 50 The real "bread from heaven" is eternal life! Don’t count on anything of this world! Everything "in the world" will let you down, leave you or kill you! Can we get an "Amen!" here?
51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. Verse 51 Another "I am" statement of Jesus! The bread Jesus speaks of is the bread of Life – not death! Let Him touch you in your heart right now! – and you will know you are eternal!

52 The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

Verse 52 The Jews are struggling to understand! Once again they ask each other, "How can Jesus give us his body to eat – that’s crazy!" They have no idea what Jesus is really talking about! Do you?

53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.

Verse 53 Eat and drink means to take in! He’s only saying that you have to accept Him totally into your life! Let Him live in you!

54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

Verse 54 The "last" day is now! Isn’t the taking of Holy Communion really about remembering Jesus? Not through His death, but through His Life! He’s Alive!! Let Him live in you, and fill you up with His Love!

55 For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.

Verse 55 Meat means solid food. Drink quenches your thirst. Jesus is the only true nourishment – your only hope! Food for the soul is not chicken soup!

56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. Verse 56 Here’s where the "rubber meets the road!" Are you willing to be an example of Jesus’ teaching of love and forgiveness?
57 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. Verse 57 Offering Himself as the example, Jesus is telling you to accept Him totally – be Him – live by His Word!

58 This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

Verse 58 The same message over and over until you believe it! Do you? Ask yourself! (There is only one answer – YES!)

59 These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.

Verse 59 Synagogue means a meeting place for Jewish worship and religious instruction! The Message is right out in the open now! "Follow Me! Love one another as I have loved you!"

60 Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?

Verse 60 Some of the disciples are finding Jesus’ message a hard one to accept! It’s only hard if you want it to be! Just remember Who walks with you, and that you are never alone!
61 When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you? Verse 61 Now some of His followers are grumbling! Jesus says, "Hey, you guys, what’s the big problem? – I thought you were with me!"

62 What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?

Verse 62 Jesus asks the question, "Would you be a believer if I ‘took off’ and returned to heaven?" Would you?

63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

Verse 63 The quickening (awakening or coming alive) is a real experience! It’s the only thing that will ever give you real happiness and peace! You can never be happy in this world!

64 But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.

Verse 64 You are totally responsible (answerable) for your actions – it’s up to you! Jesus knows you already as His brother! Do you trust yourself to Him?

65 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.

Verse 65 "That’s why I told you that until you hear the Call, you will not follow me!"

66 From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

Verse 66 Have you ever heard of "tough love?" Don’t drop out now – it’s only as tough as you make it!

67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?

Verse 67 Now Jesus is asking his chosen twelve, "Do you also want to go away?" Jesus always "lays it on the line!" How will it be for you?

68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

Verse 68 There really is nowhere for you to "go!" It’s the only answer you can have in Truth! It’s still up to you!

69 And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

Verse 69 Yes, the disciples know Who Jesus is – the Son of the living God! God has one Son – and that includes you!

70 Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?

Verse 70 Whether you like it or not, you too, have been chosen to witness to the Truth! Are you going to accept – or turn back to your old ways? The idea of devil (or Satan) in Jesus’ language, Aramaic, means seeing wrongly and acting from that error; – to slide, to slip, or miss the mark!

71 He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.

Verse 71 Judas plays an important part in the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection! His "betrayal" of Jesus starts the chain of events which leads to the final proof that the Son of God cannot die!

Do you want to learn it is impossible to suffer? Who’s the Judas in your "story?" There might be a few of them! It’s all part of the plan! Just don’t judge!
