Gospel of John
Chapter XVII

King James Bible Text

Study Notes Commentary

1 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:

Verse 1 "Glorify" means to honor or worship! Until you honor God you cannot honor yourself! And to honor God, you must honor yourself! How do you do that? Forgive yourself and remember who you are!

2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.

Verse 2 Eternal means true for and beyond all time! You have the power of God in you to have life eternal! Why? Because Jesus is telling you so – end of story!

3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

Verse 3 Life eternal is knowing the truth – accepting the witness of Jesus Christ, sent to you so that you would know! Jesus thanks God for Jesus Christ! Thank God for the Christ in you!

4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

Verse 4 By using Jesus’ example, you too, can talk to your Heavenly Father! He’s showing you how to pray to God right now!

5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

Verse 5 Thank God for Jesus! He’s your "God Connection!" You can’t do this by yourself! Try not to look on it as a sacrifice, for goodness sake!

6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.

Verse 6 Wonder of wonders – Jesus has chosen you to keep God’s Word! It’s your "story" that makes up your world! Now, it’s up to you what "story" you want to tell! How’s it going?

7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.

Verse 7 Accept your part in God’s plan right now and share His will for happiness for you! God’s word is given to all as you accept it and speak it! You are as God created you!

8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

Verse 8 You have accepted the Word that Jesus brought to you, haven’t you? And you do believe that it’s from God! God is your Source!

9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.

Verse 9 Did you know that Jesus’ prayer of the heart is for you? This is the healing of your mind! Forgive, forgive, and forgive! In fact, "seventy times seven" do you forgive!

10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.

Verse 10 Everything that belongs to Jesus is yours, and everything that is yours is Jesus’! You are His own and God’s own! Believing in Jesus, you glorify (honor) Him! Amen!

11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.

Verse 11 Jesus is not from the "world" – He’s from heaven! So are you! Even if you don’t believe it – it’s still true! God created you!

12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

Verse 12 Jesus is your protection! The only reason you would be "lost" would be by your own decision! That’s why you need this Message! You are not what you "think" you are! Quick – change your mind right now!

13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

Verse 13 Jesus gave this message to the world, so that His joy and yours would be complete! As Jesus returns His mind to God, He’s got you!

14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

Verse 14 Now that you have received God’s word, you’re different – no longer of the world! And that won’t make you popular in a place of hate, suffering and death! Yes, you will be despised by the world! Just trust Jesus!

15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

Verse 15 Jesus asks for help for you – protection from all thoughts that hurt! You have no idea how well "cared for" you really are!

16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

Verse 16 Jesus knows you don’t belong in the world! Nor does He!

17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

Verse 17 God’s word is Truth and you are sanctified (purified) in His Word!

18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

Verse 18 You have a mission! Now it’s your turn to teach the Word of God! Exciting! Didn’t you always want to know your true purpose? This is it! Go for it! You can’t fail!

19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

Verse 19 Yes, Jesus did "purify" Himself through the Love of His Father! Everything Jesus does is for your sake! His holiness (purity) is yours!

20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

Verse 20 Jesus knows it’s not possible for you to be alone or separate in any way! He’s got everyone covered! – you and those you bring to the Word!

21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

Verse 21 Child of God, you were created to create the good, the beautiful and the holy! Father, Son (You) and Holy Spirit – joined in One!

22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

Verse 22 Jesus is giving you His certainty that you are already complete and healed and whole!

23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

Verse 23 It is impossible for Jesus to return to heaven without you – this is your rebirth! Why don’t you just give up and accept your perfection? Hallelujah!

24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.

Verse 24 Jesus declares His will that you be with Him where He is! He wants you to behold your glory, given you by God in your creation! You get the general idea? – He loves you! J

25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.

Verse 25 Can you feel the gratitude Jesus has for God, His Father? Aren’t you grateful, too?!

26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

Verse 26 This whole chapter is Jesus’ prayer of thanks to God! It’s all about His love and gratitude for you! And it is His love story about You!
