Gospel of John
Chapter XVI

King James Bible Text

Study Notes Commentary

1 These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.

Verse 1 Yep – you’re going to be persecuted! But don’t take it "personally!" Jesus is just offering you the "speed up" of time – your time! Be grateful!

2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.

Verse 2 To change your mind and believe in Jesus does take courage! Are you aware that the "establishment" refuses to believe His message? Don’t worry about it! You’re in God’s Hands!
3 And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me. Verse 3 "They" don’t understand because they don’t know God or Jesus! You do know Jesus!

4 But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.

Verse 4 Jesus is the first, in time, to teach, "Love one another as I have loved you!" He didn’t have to teach you before, because He was with you in the beginning –before you forgot!

5 But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? Verse 5 Jesus is saying, "I’m going to be with my Father!" (He’ll be right back) "Why aren’t you concerned with where I’m going?"
6 But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.

Verse 6 Don’t be sad! You should be rejoicing – I’m going to The Father!

7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

Verse 7 Jesus never leaves you comfortless! The Holy Spirit (the Comforter) lives in the part of your mind that is part of the Christ Mind! Your mind is part of God’s – it is very holy!

8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Verse 8 The Holy Spirit will correct all errors in your mind! Give them to Him and watch your world be transformed! The world you see now shines with forgiveness!
9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; Verse 9 Now we see that sin (missing the mark) is simply not believing the truth that the Father and the Son are One!

10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

Verse 10 Righteousness is right thinking, not morality! Righteousness (right thinking) returns your mind to truth! The Holy Spirit never forgets the Son of God! He never forgets you!

11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

Verse 11 Judgment – the idea of good and evil is an error! It has been corrected! There is only good! Listen! When you stop judging, there will be no more judgment – God does not judge!" You have only been judging yourself! Now you can see that’s what Jesus meant, when he said, "Judge not, lest ye be judged!"

12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

Verse 12 You will be changed – you need Jesus’ help! Ask Him! Bear means support! He will lift you up!

13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

Verse 13 Yea! The Holy Spirit rocks!!!! The last judgment is the last judgment – no more!

14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

Verse 14 "Trust in God" – repeat this over and over until you really "get it!" The "fix" is in and you are included!

15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

Verse 15 Yours? God’s? It’s all the same! God has given you everything! Thank you, Father!

16 A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.

Verse 16 Jesus really is a "time traveller!" Now you see Him – now you don’t – now you see Him! How exciting!

17 Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?

Verse 17 Jesus always makes sense! You can trust that! The Kingdom of God is invisible to human eyes! How can they understand? – remember, they don’t even believe "earthly things."

18 They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.

Verse 18 Don’t try to figure out what Jesus is saying! When you have prepared your mind you will understand! He’s only asking that you trust Him! Pretty simple really! He’s the answer to the prayer of your heart!

19 Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?

Verse 19 Jesus knows they’re afraid to ask! Is that silly? So he says, "Look – for awhile it may seem that I’m not with you, but don’t be afraid – I’ll be back!"

20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

Verse 20 "You may be sad for a moment, but the world is being healed! Through me, the world of death is being returned to Life! – Your sorrow will become joy!"

21 A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.

Verse 21 "It’s like when a child is being born – first there is suffering, but then there is New Life and rejoicing!"

22 And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.

Verse 22 Your sadness becomes joy as you are "born in the spirit!" You seem to have your own special problems, but trust Jesus! You will receive joy that cannot be taken from you! Promise!

23 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.

Verse 23 God is your Father and He loves His Son! What you ask in Jesus’ name (the Name you share with Him) God will give to you! Just ask! Ask for help!

24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

Verse 24 In Jesus’ name – "Ask and ye shall receive!" Now it’s up to you to just "do it!" Call upon God’s Name and on your own!

25 These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.

Verse 25 Remember that Jesus teaches in "stories" so that you will understand! The time will come (and did) when you won’t need stories anymore – just the Truth!

26 At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:

Verse 26 By asking "in Jesus’ name" – you will learn His name is yours! All you have to do is say, "God – let me recognize my problem so it can be solved!" Whammy – there it is!

27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.

Verse 27 See! It’s really very simple! GOD LOVES YOU RIGHT NOW! You don’t have to die to be in heaven! Just change your mind! Just place your future in the Hands of God!

28 I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.

Verse 28 You are pure energy! If you know anything about quantum physics, you know that you are "appearing and disappearing" all the time! Go and look it up!

29 His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.

Verse 29 Whoa! The disciples realize that Jesus really does know everything! No more stories – even yours!

30 Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.

Verse 30 They’re finally convinced Jesus is from God! He is the Savior! Are you convinced? Do you see what this means to you? Jesus is your Savior! You are under no laws but God’s! Believe it!

31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?

Verse 31 "What! – you finally believe Me?"

32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

Verse 32 You’ll think you’re on your own! But no one ever walks alone! God has always been with you – even if you didn’t know it! "The Lord is your Shepherd!" Go on – read the 23rd Psalm in the Old Testament! That’s your homework!

33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. Verse 33 Tribulation is suffering. The world is full of suffering, but don’t worry – Jesus has overcome the world for you! The Peace of God has replaced suffering! Yea! Jesus is the Prince of Peace!
