Gospel of John
Chapter
XIII |

King James
Bible Text |
Study Notes
Commentary |
|
1 Now before the feast of
the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he
should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his
own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
|
Verse 1 Can you feel the
sweetness of Jesus’ love as he is preparing to complete his
mission? Jesus knows God has a plan for Him and that God loves Him
– and you as Himself! To "depart out of this world" does not
mean death! God will not let Jesus die – so don’t be
concerned!
|
|
2 And supper being ended,
the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s
son, to betray him;
|
Verse 2 What is the
devil, but temptation? – the temptation to believe the way you
see things is how they really are! Watch – and see how Judas takes
action, thinking he knows what needs to occur!
|
|
3 Jesus knowing that the
Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come
from God, and went to God;
|
Verse 3 Jesus isn’t the
least bit concerned about what’s going to happen! He knows God is
in charge!
|
|
4 He riseth from supper,
and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. |
Verse 4 He takes off His
street clothes and wraps a towel around his waist! Taking off his
"worldly clothes" sort of sounds like giving up the world, doesn’t
it? |
|
5 After that he poureth
water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to
wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. |
Verse 5 Jesus performs a
ceremony. In washing their feet, he is teaching and showing His
love!
|
|
6 Then cometh he to Simon
Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
|
Verse 6 Peter, where’s
your trust? Wait – and let Jesus’ lesson unfold!
|
|
7 Jesus answered and said
unto him, What I do thou knowest
not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.
|
Verse 7 You don’t know
why Jesus is doing what He’s doing! Don’t be concerned – you
will be told and you will understand! Just be
patient!
|
|
8 Peter saith unto him,
Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him,
If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with
me.
|
Verse 8 Wow! Let
yourself be included in Jesus’ plan! Peter only needs
to say, "Yes! Thank you!" You, too!
|
|
9 Simon Peter saith unto
him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. |
Verse 9 Simon Peter isn’t
hearing Jesus at all! Sometimes you just have to be grateful!
THANK YOU, GOD!
|
|
10 Jesus saith to him,
He that is washed needeth not save
to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but
not all.
|
Verse 10 Jesus knows you
are clean already, as God’s perfect creation! Jesus tells them,
"To be clean, you need only wash your feet!" Now He has
washed their feet (corrected their understanding)! So, they are
clean – except one of them!
|
|
11 For he knew who should
betray him; therefore said he, Ye
are not all clean.
|
Verse 11 He knows that
one will "betray" Him! (Remember Judas has "a part he must play.")
|
|
12 So after he had washed
their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he
said unto them, Know ye what I
have done to you? |
Verse 12 Jesus asks His
disciples what they think just happened!
|
|
13
Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well;
for so I am.
|
Verse 13 Jesus is certain
of What He Is! God is His Father and He is His Son!
|
|
14
If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed
your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.
|
Verse 14 What a great
example! Jesus always teaches, "Love one another, as I have loved
you!" Washing his disciples’ feet is an Act of Love!
|
|
15
For I have given you an example, that ye
should do as I have done to you. |
Verse 15 Isn’t it amazing
how good you feel doing "acts of kindness?" Serving
others makes you happy! Jesus is your example!
|
|
16
Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant
is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than
he that sent him. |
Verse 16 There is no such
thing as "higher" or "lower" in the kingdom of heaven! Thank
goodness! We’re all the same – God’s perfect Son!
|
|
17
If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye
do them.
|
Verse 17 In truth you
will only be happy if you "give yourself away!"
|
|
18
I speak not of you all: I know whom I have
chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth
bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.
|
Verse 18 The scripture
will be fulfilled: One will deliver him up! Jesus knows who he has
chosen to play the part of the "betrayer!"
|
|
19
Now I tell you before it come, that, when it
is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.
|
Verse 19 When you
experience being "lifted up" from the insanity of your own mind –
you will remember what Jesus is saying and believe Him! |
|
20
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that
receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me
receiveth him that sent me. |
Verse 20 "He who receives
him whom I send, receives me; and he who receives me receives Him
who sent me!" The Message is the same!
God is a fact!
|
|
21 When Jesus had thus
said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said,
Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one
of you shall betray me. |
Verse 21 Yes – you do get
a "gut feeling" about these things! Jesus is no different than
you! What do you think your conscience is for?
|
|
22 Then the disciples
looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake.
|
Verse 22 Maybe there is
some whispering around the table – "Is it me Lord?" Do you doubt
your own faithfulness? God doesn’t – He knows you! |
|
23 Now there was leaning
on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
|
Verse 23 John, the author
of this story, was the disciple "whom Jesus loved!" Remember,
Jesus loves all His
disciples – You too! |
|
24 Simon Peter therefore
beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he
spake. |
Verse 24 Simon Peter
catches John’s eye. "Ask Jesus who He means!"
|
|
25 He then lying on
Jesus’ breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?
|
Verse 25 Can you feel
Simon Peter’s doubt? "Will I be the one who betrays you, Lord?" |
|
26 Jesus answered, He
it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And
when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son
of Simon.
|
Verse 26 Sop means
a piece of bread dipped in soup! Jesus gives the sop to Judas! He
knows that Judas will carry out the assignment of
"betrayal!"
|
|
27 And after the sop
Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him,
That thou doest, do quickly.
|
Verse 27 This is the role
Judas has accepted! In the idea of good and evil, "Satan" is the
idea of evil! God doesn’t know of evil! Look at your own
"idea of guilt and evil!" – then let it go quickly!
|
|
28 Now no man at the
table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.
|
Verse 28 All you
need to know is that the part you "play" has only the meaning that
you give it! Relax! |
|
29 For some of them
thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him,
Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that
he should give something to the poor.
|
Verse 29 The disciples
don’t know what’s going on! Remember, whatever story you make up
is not it! God has a plan! Are you willing to let God’s
plan be revealed to you?
|
30 He then having
received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.
|
Verse 30 After receiving
the sop, Judas goes off into the night to carry out his "task!"
Don’t forget – there is a BIG PLAN! |
|
31 Therefore, when he was
gone out, Jesus said, Now is the
Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
|
Verse 31 Now is the
moment when you – the Son of man – take on your Holy
Identity, as Jesus did! When you accept your holiness, God is
glorified in you! This is God’s glory –that You are His
Son!
|
|
32
If God be glorified in him, God shall also
glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.
|
Verse 32 What is your
glory? That You are God’s Son! Glory is of God!
Jesus is offering salvation to everyone! Be glad He’s your
Savior! |
|
33
Little children, yet a little while I am
with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I
go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.
|
Verse 33 "Little
children" is you in your own innocence! He’s "going
away," but don’t be confused! He’s not gone, and He’s
not dead! This message from Jesus is about your own
return to God – your "rebirth!"
|
|
34
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye
love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one
another.
|
Verse 34 The New
Commandment! This is the roadmap to follow: Love your brother!
Accept this commandment, and you will find that’s all you ever
wanted to do in your heart.
|
|
35
By this shall all men know that ye are my
disciples, if ye have love one to another.
|
Verse 35 You can be sure
that you will be seen as "different" when you live the New
Commandment of "love one another!" Go for it – you’re free!
|
|
36 Simon Peter said unto
him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him,
Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now;
but thou shalt follow me afterwards. |
Verses 36 "What does
Jesus mean – ‘afterwards’?" Peter doesn’t like the idea that he’s
going to be separated from Jesus!
|
|
37 Peter said unto him,
Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for
thy sake.
|
Verse 37 Peter doesn’t
understand Jesus, or he wouldn’t offer to "die for Him!" No one
can die for anyone! But you must "lay
down" your human life to "take up" life eternal! Remember the
seed? (Ch 12:24)
|
|
38 Jesus answered him,
Wilt thou lay down thy life for my
sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow,
till thou hast denied me thrice.
|
Verse 38 To swear on your
own willpower is to be mistaken! Sure, you’ll screw it up, Jesus
knows that! But, Salvation is from God and has
nothing to do with what you do!
