Gospel of John
Chapter XII

King James Bible Text

Study Notes Commentary

1 Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.

Verse 1 Remember, the story is that Lazarus was "raised from the dead." If Lazarus thought he was a body, he was dead! Death is just an idea! You can change your mind! What if you really believed everything is an idea? It is!

2 There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.

Verse 2 See! Lazarus is not dead – so he could not possibly have died! You either believe Jesus entirely or not at all! He is showing you the way out of hell! Just drop your own story right now and wake up!

3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.

Verse 3 Mary simply and sweetly expresses her love for Jesus! She’s acting on the impulse of her heart! Why not show the love you feel for your "brother?" Isn’t it really your heart’s desire to show that you care?

4 Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, which should betray him,

Verse 4 Judas has just got to say something!

5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? Verse 5 He doesn’t understand! And so he questions Mary’s act of love, and says, "What a waste of money!"

6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. Verse 6 Judas carried (bare) their money bag! But he’s a thief! His story is that the money should have been spent on the poor! Do you think that was really his concern?

7 Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.

Verse 7 Mary knows Jesus is her Savior, and she loves Him with her whole heart! She gives Him everything! He knows it! Wow! Are you ready to give everything – your whole self – to Jesus? Try it!

8 For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.

Verse 8 Yes, the poor (in spirit) will always be YOU – if you don’t have Jesus!

9 Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead. Verse 9 Nothing like a spectacle to draw the crowds, eh? Jesus knows that too! Did raising Lazarus get their attention? Did He get yours? I hope so!

10 But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;

Verse 10 Now the priests want Lazarus and Jesus put to death! Pretty vicious isn’t it? Isn’t that how the human mind goes – from "suspicious to vicious?"
11 Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus. Verse 11 The priests are losing their followers, since Jesus brought Lazarus back from the dead! So, they want to destroy the evidence of the miracle!
12 On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, Verse 12 The city is filled with people celebrating the Passover feast and wanting to see Jesus (the miracle worker who raises the dead)!

13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Verse 13 Oh my goodness! Now Jesus is being "idolized" – something He never wanted! He says you and He are One in the Father!

14 And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,|

Verse 14 It is written in the Old Testament about a "warrior" king coming into the city on a young ass (a donkey)!

15 Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass’s colt.

Verse 15 This also is written in the Old Testament: "Fear not, O daughter of Zion; behold your king cometh to you, riding on the colt of an ass!"
16 These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.

Verse 16 It is only after Jesus’ resurrection that the disciples remembered these prophecies, which did come to pass! You are always looking back on things, but, hey! it’s always OVER! Stay in the present – forgive yourself!

17 The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.

Verse 17 Yes, the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead spreads around! "Lazarus is alive!" A miracle is a correction that reminds your mind that what it sees is false!
18 For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.

Verse 18 Miracles are natural – it’s only when they do not happen that something has gone wrong!

19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.

Verse 19 The Pharisees are really panicking now! "Look, this isn’t going the way we want at all! Now everyone’s following this guy!"

20 And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast:

Verse 20 The Greeks are non-Jews (Gentiles). They have come to Jerusalem to worship God!

21 The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus. Verse 21 They want to see Jesus – the miracle worker! They feel safe asking Philip (Jesus’ disciple, also Greek ) if they can see Jesus! Remember – fear is all around them!

22 Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.

Verse 22 It’s happening! – His message is being heard! The disciples pass the word along to Jesus!

23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.

Verse 23 Jesus’ time is now – to give up his "humanness" and accept His True Inheritance! The Son of man is now the Son of God! "The glory of God is His Son!" Are you beginning to see how to put yourself into every paragraph you’re reading? We’re talking about your time, your humaness, your true inheritance! Get the picture?
24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

Verse 24 Are you beginning to catch on to Jesus’ way of teaching through parables (or stories)? The seed must give up being a seed, to become the full-grown plant – a colorful way to teach you must be born again! You have to give up your human identity (the face that you hide behind) in order to find out what you truly are!

25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

Verse 25 You, God’s Son, do not belong in the world! Whatever you value in this world, you will lose! Jesus says this over and over!

26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour. Verse 26 Does Jesus tell you how to follow him? Yes! His Commandment is, "Love one another as I have loved you!" It’s a change of your mind! The "fast track" out of this world of suffering and misery and pain.
27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.

Verse 27 This is the crunch! Finally, you must ask yourself: Am I going to shrink back, protect my identity and ask to be saved from this hour? [Do I really want to avoid "dying" (like the seed)?] NO! I have a real purpose – God’s plan for me! This is why I am here!
28 Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again. Verse 28 God is your father – His name is yours! God created you perfect! – you are still perfect! His Name is glorified in you!
29 The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him. Verse 29 God’s Voice speaks to you all through the day! It is quite possible to listen to Him all through the day! Yes – angels hover all around you as well!

30 Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.

Verse 30 Jesus knows God speaks to Him! The Voice from heaven is for you so that you will have faith in God!

31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

Verse 31 A prince rules. What is the "prince of this world?" Judgment! But remember? "Judge not!" Cast out judgment! See? Then you’re not ruled or imprisoned by your ideas! Look where they got you!

32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. Verse 32 As Jesus is raised to a higher place, He will lift you up, too! Trust Him to lift you up right now!

33 This he said, signifying what death he should die.

Verse 33 He is not talking about the death of His body – He resurrects! He knows you are not a body – you are Spirit!

34 The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?

Verse 34 "Who is this Son of man?" Jesus – you, in your awakening! It’s about you letting go of all your ideas of what you think you are, and coming to God with an open mind, an open heart, and open arms – He’s your heavenly Father!
35 Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. Verse 35 Darkness means unenlightened in mind or spirit! Here is your chance right now – you don’t know what you’re doing! Walk with Jesus in your heart and you will never walk in darkness again! It’s the best!

36 While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them. Verse 36 Be thankful that you have a friend in Jesus! He knows when to talk with His Father so He "splits" for a moment! It’s okay for you to "rest" in Jesus and talk to Him!

37 But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:

Verse 37 Still doubting Jesus, are you? Well, you’re no different than any other human being! But, you’re not a human being, right? – you are Spirit!

38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? Verse 38 Esaias (the Greek name for Isaiah), an Old Testament prophet, said, "God, who will believe this?" How about you? Can you believe that God has sent a Savior to protect you?

39 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, Verse 39 Again Esaias (Isaiah) speaks of the coming Messiah (Savior), and the people still don’t believe him!
40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. Verse 40 What is it that blinds your eyes and hardens your heart? Judgment! Look upon your own blindness and hardness – go ahead! That is the way you are converted and healed!

41 These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.

Verse 41 Esaias speaks of the Savior and His glory. He has come! You can experience God’s Glory as your own! Ask!
42 Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:

Verse 42 Wow! How painful it is to know your own truth and be afraid to speak it! If you are afraid, then it’s a sure sign that you are trusting in your own strength! Remember God – and there is nothing to fear!

43 For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

Verse 43 Whose praise are you looking for – man’s or God’s? Bottom line – it’s the Love of God, not the "praise of men" that will comfort you!

44 Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. Verse 44 Jesus is forever saying that God sent Him into the world, and only through the Love of God is He able to do miracles! Trust in God!

45 And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.

Verse 45 See means to understand! Jesus is saying, "I and My Father are One!"

46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.

Verse 46 "Darkness" is ignorance! Miracles are seen in light, and light and strength are one! God is your strength right now – believe in Him!
47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. Verse 47 Jesus loves you – of this you can be sure! Nor does He judge you for what you think you have done! He has come to save the world! You!

48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

Verse 48 God does not judge! You have been your own worst enemy! Today is the last day! Stop being so hard on yourself! You are as God created you! Now you can bless everyone you see!

49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.

Verse 49 "Everything that I’m giving you came to me from God! He directs me!" Can you imagine letting God have complete control in your life? You are not a victim – stop blaming anyone else!

50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

Verse 50 Jesus certainly does know where His strength is coming from – do you? Life everlasting! That’s cool! Go for it! Speak the words of Jesus!
